Improving Educators Professional Development Through Collaboration

بواسطة : Unknown بتاريخ : 1:38 ص
By Jessica Wallace

People across professions require regular professional development. This is a fast-paced world and so techniques and methods develop rapidly. If an individual gets educated under a certain system and practice, the same might go obsolete in times to come. This is because as the technologies are developed, they are applied to different methods to improve the quality of work. That is why it becomes for people to be ahead of times as far as the application of technology and new pedagogy is concerned. Improving educators professional development from time to time is something worth the investment.

Plans and Preparation; Planning is perhaps the most influential tool you can use to your ability to overcome challenges like teaching others excellent professional development skills. A good rule to use when trying to manage time in the preparation phase is to "double your chances." For example, if you wanted to deliver a two-hour speech on an aspect that you felt was important, you should put in at least four hours of research and preparation into the speech.

Research has shown that schools that foster teacher collaboration and mentoring between novice and experienced teachers have lower turnover rates. Another study found positive relationships between schools that foster teacher collaboration and achievement scores in math and reading.

Based on evidence from research, Professional Learning Communities have shown to improve instruction, improve achievement, and lower teacher turnover. With all this evidence, why don't more principals implement ways for teachers to share and collaborate on a regular basis? With that being said, I have compiled a list of suggestions that schools and school districts may follow in order to foster a Professional Learning Community.

It is worth noting that experience Changes Interactions. You don't want to treat adults like children. Patronizing them is usually the fastest way to lose their respect. And just as you'll want to keep them under the notion that they are controlling their education, you'll also want to tailor that education to their experiences. One way to fail at this is to take the overused stance of forced accountability, or "guilt tripping." It is generally not the greatest idea to remind individuals of their past mistakes.

There are online programs that cater to certain range of specifications. People can select the type of topic they want to excel in and enroll them in a course that suits their needs. A simple search on the Internet will give a list of websites that offer character building courses. These websites are self-explanatory and informative.

Part of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) addresses the need for students to apply concepts across multiple disciplines. It is a great idea for Language Arts teachers to collaborate with teachers in other disciplines such as history or even science and discuss ways to intertwine multiple disciplines. The same goes for math and reading. It's a great idea for principals to encourage cross-curricular collaboration, but also a good idea for principals to dedicate one day per semester for this purpose.

So with the ever-growing demand for online career development, it looks like we will be seeing more companies like offer programs for schools. Hopefully, this new way of professional develop will give teachers the flexibility they are looking for and give them resources to improve their techniques in the classroom.
