During Goal Setting Workshops NM Companies Can Empower Their Teams

The business environment is a hostile one. Competition is fierce, global markets are opening up and consumers are becoming more demanding. Only those companies that can remain on the cutting edge can hope to flourish. This requires a high degree of focus. In turn, no company can focus if it does not have very specific goals that it works toward. In goal setting workshops NM companies learn how to focus their efforts towards greater success.

Far too many people see goals as a vague intention to achieve an equally vague outcome. Nothing can be further from the truth. Goals and objectives are very specific, or at least the should be. No business can afford to commit resources to the achievement of goals that are not clearly defined. Nor can businesses expect to achieve any results if they do not understand exactly what those expected results are.

One of the main characteristics of a proper objective is that it will contain an active and measurable verb. Here is one terrible example. We will understand the principles that guide the manufacturing of fourth generation smart phones. This is not an objective because there is no measurable verb. One cannot measure the extent to which someone understands something. An objective simply has to contain an action verb that can be measured.

If one has an objective to bake twenty bran muffins then there is certainly an action verb that can be observed. One can see how the muffins are baked. There is an element missing, however. A good objective will also indicate the standard to which the objective must be achieved. In this example, the objective should be to bake twenty bran muffins that will be approved by the home industry council. If the muffins are not approved, then the objective has not been achieved.

The last element of a good objective is the inclusion of a time frame. It should stipulate when the objective will be achieved. The objective should therefore be to bake twenty bran muffins by 15 May 2018 that will be approved by the home industry council. This is a true objective. Its achievement can be observed, the date when it is achieved can be checked and the standard to which it is achieved can be measured.

An objective is a final desired outcome. It cannot be achieved unless it is expanded into an action plan. An action plan will contain all the smaller steps and achievements that must be completed before the objective can be deemed as achieved. Learning how to set goals should therefore always be accompanied by instructions on how to develop a realistic action plan.

There are numerous individuals and consultants that offer courses in how to set goals. Choosing one is not always easy. It is best to choose someone that is familiar with the company because they will be able to adapt their classes to focus specifically on the needs and vision of the client. It may also be important to check that the instructor is properly accredited and qualified.

When one examines floundering companies the lack of proper goals will almost always pop up as one of the main sources of their woes. Goals are important because they provide direction and purpose to teams and individuals. Learning to set proper goals should be a priority for all companies.
