Tips For Making Vegan Holiday Recipes

Many families across the country make it a point to get together as the holidays approach. These special times of the year are prime occasions for relatives to share memories and laughs as well as enjoy delicious meals with their loved ones. However, mealtime can be a particular challenge for people who follow vegetarian diets or diets for vegans. They may not want to eat turkey, ham, chicken, and other animal products. By incorporating some ideas for vegan holiday recipes into your meal prep, you can make these people feel welcome and at home.

The autumn and winter months are a time of year when squash and gourds come into season. Favorites like pumpkin, acorn squash, and spaghetti squash can be purchased at any grocery store often for affordable prices. They also are foods that vegetarians and vegans can eat during the holidays. You could stock up on squash and gourds as you get ready to cook meals for your loved ones.

If you have never before prepared squash or gourds, you might wonder how to go about it. In fact, it is relatively simple to make this produce into delicious dishes. The most common way to prepare them involves cutting them in half and then scooping out the seeds and insides. After that step, you then can add olive oil or margarine before peppering and salting and then baking them.

When the flesh is soft, you may then scoop it out into a dish and mash it like you would potatoes. Another way to serve them is to slice the flesh thinly and then add more margarine or oil to it. Squash can be a side item or a main dish.

Mushrooms are another option for replacing meat for these individuals. In particular, portabella mushrooms are large and meaty. They have a lot of flavor and can satisfy anyone's appetite because of how large and filling they are. They also can be found in grocery stores year round and do not cost a lot of money.

Once you bake them until they are soft, you can slice them into strips and serve them with more melted margarine or olive oil. You also can roll them in breading and fry them in oil. They are a good substitute for meat and can be just as filling as a plateful of ham, chicken, or turkey during a big meal.

If you insist on serving something as close as possible to meat during your special dinners, you may consider tofurkey as a replacement for the vegans and vegetarians in the family. As its name implies, tofurkey is a tofu product shaped into the size and shape of a turkey. It contains no meat products, however, and is made entirely from tofu and other ingredients. It can be seasoned like turkey with onion, sage, salt, and pepper so it is more palatable.

These ideas may help you prepare a vegan friendly meal. Not everyone eats meat, which is why the holidays can be particularly challenging for these individuals. However, by incorporating these dishes into the meal, you could ensure everyone at the table has something they can eat and enjoy during Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other celebrations.
