It's easy for seniors to get isolated, slow down physically, and become depressed. Eating right and exercising regularly are goals too often put off. This activity will tone your muscles. Spinning, fast turns, and quick stepping are great for building muscle strength and toning your legs. You probably won't notice it, but as you dance with your partner, you are both participating in a form of resistance training. Men might not be able to lift their partners over their heads, but leading them around the dance floor will tone arms and abs.

Dance helps prevent osteoporosis. Bones can become brittle and joint stiff as people age. It's a natural part of the process. Dance can help this from happening. When your bones are strong and your joints are flexible, your chance of serious injury decreases.

Both men and women benefit from the muscle stretching that dance requires.

Without doing something about it, your metabolism starts to slow down when you reach the age of twenty-five. As you reach your senior years it can be hard to get rid of unwanted fat. Dance burns calories in a fun and relaxing way.

Dance increases endurance and conditions the total body. If walking up a flight of stairs is getting harder and harder, you are losing endurance. You can elevate it with dance. When you first start, you will probably feel tired and short of breath fairly quickly. That's why instructors start students out slow. As you progress you will find yourself more relaxed and able to last on the dance floor as long as someone much younger than yourself.

Dance is good for your brain. Losing themselves to dementia is one of the biggest fears seniors have. With no known cause or cure, this disease eventually wipes away a person's whole life. Scientists believe that stimulating spatial memory is a critical component to a healthy brain and preventing Alzheimer's. You are using spatial memory as you learn dance steps.

Growing old is challenging. It takes work to remain active and engaged. Taking up dancing is a wonderful to get good exercise. It is food for your brain and a way to socialize with others who are learning along with you.
