Historical Fiction Graphic Novels Is The Radical New Way To Enhance Education

بواسطة : Unknown بتاريخ : 1:15 ص
By Patricia Evans

History is ugly. Everyone knows it is full of violence and death, but it is also full of heroism, self-reflection, romance, intrigue, and achievements which have occurred against all odds. Why should we deny young people the opportunity to experience it through historical fiction graphic novels.

Such a novel is actually a comic book. Using comic books to relay events from the past, utilizing the same colorful language, exciting character development, and dramatic effect just might allow us to make young people understand why the world is the way it is. More than that, comic books have always inspired young readers to really Be-Somebody when they grow up.

Young people who grow up reading comic books are often inspired to become physicists, scientists, and astronauts through their reading. Science, mathematics, and quantum theory all comprise the backdrop of many of these stories. When the readers realize that these technologies are being developed, it ignites their souls.

Making history as fascinating to young people as the future just might change the whole spectrum of thought in a single generation. If young people were able to connect the information they learn in their textbooks to the events they experience in their lives, then the future changes. This connection of past to present has been denied us in our education by teachers who have no vision themselves.

When we make history as exciting as science fiction, then we create a connection in young minds between past and present. Memorizing lists of dates, names, and events never taught a student anything meaningful. However, a colorful novel filled with images of the real pain, suffering, and glory of humanity makes this information stick in way that creates an impression.

No one would suggest that our history be taught in such a manner that one would give it an NC-17 rating. However, the watered-down, hoarse-dry version being taught in schools today teaches them very little about how mankind has arrived to this point. It fails them by failing to give them the information they need to connect history with current events.

Modern historians and researchers are seeking to reveal truths and allow radical new theories of our origins that rock the establishment to its core. This information can no longer be hidden from the world, but our educational system still fails to keep up with these changes out of dogmatic fear. Their disgrace should be engraved on their gravestones.

The notion that ignorance of the past condemns repeat patterns is true. But let us not be obtuse in our interpretation of this message, as it is failure to connect past events with current events that condemns us. If history continues to be taught as merely spoon-fed facts to students who are discouraged to pursue further research, then brace yourself for the next Holocaust.
